Description

Since 30 September 2019, Jumilla has been home to a new museum located in the House of the Brotherhood of Christ Tied to the Column. The museum bears the name of its founder, D. Roque Molera Rivera, marking the first opportunity to pay tribute to him through this dedication.

This museum is unique in Jumilla due to the nature of its content. It is made up of several thematic areas that bring the history of the Brotherhood to life through images, recreating visual memories that engage the visitor.

The exhibition is organised into seven different sections, offering an appealing journey that leaves no visitor indifferent.

“Los Armaos” are the very origins of the Brotherhood. Through them began what is now the Brotherhood of Christ Tied to the Column, which is why a significant part of the museum is dedicated to them. They have always played a key role within the Brotherhood and within Jumilla’s Holy Week as a whole.

In addition to taking part in the Holy Week processions, “Los Armaos” traditionally guarded the Monument at the Main Parish Church of Santiago from Holy Thursday to Holy Friday. They also participated on Holy Saturday in the celebration of the Resurrection and the enactment of “El Caracol”.

The museum displays costumes that are more than 100 years old. Some of these garments, after many years out of sight, were recovered following the Brotherhood’s refoundation in 2017 and once again took part in Holy Week processions. Today, the group is made up of nearly fifty members across its different sections (Paloma, Lancers and Drums).

Within the museum, visitors can admire unique pieces that invite contemplation such as remnants filled with memories and nostalgia, especially for families who see part of their own history reflected here. These objects stand out for their exclusivity, artistic value, technical excellence and symbolic meaning.

It is difficult to define precisely the fascination that “Los Armaos” exert. Their striking colours and the rich variety of forms and tones found in their tunics and cloaks reflect the spirit and grace that flourish in the soul of Jumilla.
