This town is located in the northern area of the Altiplano, in the Murcia region area. Its origins date back to the Bronze Age, as the ruins that were found at the top of the Castle Hill show. At the summit, the original nucleus of the population was created and later inhabited by Ibers, Romans and Arabs. On the Historical and Artistic Route, a must-see is Santiago’s Main Church, built in the 15th century, featuring a Gothic vault and a magnificent 16th-century altarpiece. Just nearby is Plaza Arriba, the historic center where the town’s political and economic life flourished in the 16th century. Another notable landmark is the Casón, the best-preserved Late Roman funerary mausoleum in Europe. The city is also famous for its festivities, including the Grape Harvest Festival and Holy Week, both recognised as events of International Tourist Interest. Finally, Jumilla is renowned for its rich culinary heritage. Local specialties such as Gazpachos Jumillanos, rabbit with rice, gachamiga, and wine rolls are sure to delight every visitor.
