The Jumilla P.D.O.

The Jumilla P.D.O. Territory

Our land extends over 22,700 hectares of vineyards, located between the regions of Albacete and Murcia. Experts consider it a rising Denomination of Origin due to the quality and originality of its wines. Today, this is a reality, as it is one of the best-selling Spanish Denominations of Origin.
We, the passionate people behind Jumilla P.D.O. wine, are making a serious effort at every level to continually offer higher quality. From the vinegrowers, who carefully tend their vines, monitor the harvest, and track grape ripeness, to the winemakers, who apply the latest techniques and modernise their facilities, everyone is committed to excellence.

Vineyards

The Monastrell variety is, without question, the cornerstone of the Jumilla Denomination of Origin. It is the grape that has best adapted over time to the local soil and climate, giving the wines their distinctive character. Today, Monastrell accounts for more than 80% of the vineyards in the denomination.

This variety, of Spanish origin, is widely cultivated along the Mediterranean coast and ranks as the third most planted grape variety in Spain.

It is a very rustic vine, highly resistant to drought, and requires ample sunlight. It has a medium-high sensitivity to mildew and oidium, it is very resistant to excoriosis, gray rot and moth, presenting high resistance to phylloxera.

Wines

Wines of the Jumilla D.O. stand out for their distinctive character, built on Monastrell rootstock. This grape accounts for more than 80% of the vineyards, supported by the modernisation efforts of growers and winemakers. As a result, Jumilla wines have gained prestige and recognition both in the Spanish and international wine markets.

Land

The Jumilla Denomination of Origin is located in southeastern Spain, spanning the northern part of the Murcia Region and the southeastern area of Albacete. It is a rugged landscape, where vineyards thrive on a high plateau surrounded by mountains.

The soils of the denomination are brown, calcareous-brown, and calcareous, generally boasting high water-holding capacity and moderate permeability. This allows the vines to withstand prolonged droughts, making efficient use of the available water. The soils are low in organic matter, their structure prevents the spread of phylloxera, they have a high pH and low salinity, and their loamy to loamy-sandy texture provides good aeration. The vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 400 to 800 meters.

Climate

The character of Jumilla wines is defined by the unique concept of “terroir”. This magical combination of grape variety, soil composition, vineyard location and vine pruning, together with climate conditions, gives the wines their unique identity. These characteristics set them apart from products of other regions.

The climate of the region is continental, influenced by the nearby Mediterranean Sea to the east and La Mancha plateau to the west. The area enjoys sunny and dry weather, with over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and low rainfall, rarely exceeding 300 mm annually. Rainfall is irregular, and sometimes it can be torrential. The average annual temperature is around 16°C, with cold winters dropping to 0°C and hot summers occasionally exceeding 40°C. The frost season typically occurs between November and March.
