Description

WINE MUSEUM

The Jumilla Wine Museum showcases a rich winemaking tradition spanning more than 5,000 years of history. It is located in the restored former esparto-grass warehouses in El Arsenal area, now converted into a museum. The museum offers a journey through the history of wine in our town, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a visual and interactive experience of wine culture and heritage.

The permanent exhibition is divided into three main areas. The first provides an overview of the archaeology and history of wine, a cultural heritage that has shaped life in the region since the Chalcolithic period. Visitors can discover, among many other aspects, the earliest Vitis vinifera seeds found at the El Prado archaeological site, dating back 5,000 years; the role of wine in Iberian culture; the Greek symposium; the democratisation of wine consumption in Ancient Rome; and the flavouring and preparation of wine during the Middle Ages.

The second area highlights the economic importance of the wine industry from the 19th century onwards, addressing key topics such as the significance of the Monastrell grape variety in our region. It also explores both traditional and modern winemaking processes, as well as the transport and export of wine to international markets. In addition, the exhibition examines the phylloxera crisis and its impact on Jumilla’s economy, along with traditional wine-related professions.

The final exhibition area is dedicated to the Protected Designation of Origin and la Ruta del Vino Jumilla, key drivers of wine tourism in our town. Visitors can learn more about our cultural, historical, and natural heritage, as well as local festivities, people, gastronomy, and traditions. The exhibition showcases the result of a millennia-long evolution in which wine has become a fundamental element of our culture and a major economic force. In this final area, visitors can appreciate the result of a millennia-long evolution, in which wine has become an intrinsic part of our culture and a powerful economic driver.

The Jumilla Wine Museum also offers additional facilities, including a conference hall with a capacity for 72 people, a tasting room, a temporary exhibition room, and, of course, an outdoor area designed for all types of events.
