WINE MUSEUM
The Jumilla Wine Museum is the result of a long wine-making tradition spanning more than 5,000 years. Located in the restored former esparto grass warehouses of El Arsenal, this museum center offers a journey through the history of wine in our town, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world and culture of wine through a visual and interactive experience.
The permanent exhibition is divided into three major exhibition areas. The first focuses on the history and archeology of wine, a cultural heritage that has shaped the lives of the people who have inhabited this territory since the Chalcolithic period. Visitors can learn, among other things, about the first pips of vitis vinifera found at the El Prado site with 5,000 years of history, the role of wine in Iberian culture, what the Greek symposium was like, the democratization of wine consumption in Ancient Rome, and the dressing of wine in the Middle Ages.
The second area revolves around the economic importance of the wine industry from the 19th century onwards and deals with topics as interesting as the importance of the Monastrell variety in our territory, the traditional and current ways of making wine, its transport and export to foreign markets, the relationship between the phylloxera crisis and the economic take-off of Jumilla, and the traditional professions related to wine.
Finally, the third exhibition part of the museum is dedicated to the Protected Designation of Origin and the Jumilla Wine Route, which promotes wine tourism in our town. The public can delve into the cultural, historical and natural heritage of Jumilla and learn about its festivals, people, gastronomy and traditions. In this last area we can appreciate the result of an evolution of thousands of years where wine has become an intrinsic part of our culture and a powerful economic generator.
The Wine Museum also has other services such as the assembly hall, with capacity for 72 people, a tasting room, a temporary exhibition hall and, of course, an outdoor space for holding all kinds of events.
