El territorio de la D.O.P Jumilla

Our area, which includes some 22,700 hectares of vineyards spread between the provinces of Murcia and Albacete, is considered by the specialized press as an emerging designation of origin due to the quality and originality of its wines. Today, it is a reality, being one of the Spanish designations of origin that commercializes the most wine.

We, the wine people of the DOP Jumilla, full of enthusiasm, are making a serious effort at all levels to continue offering more and more quality wines, from the winegrower with the careful care of their vineyards, harvest controls and maturity monitoring, to the winemakers with the best technology and modernization of their facilities.

Vineyards

To speak of the Jumilla Designation of Origin is to speak of the Monastrell variety, this being the grape variety that has best adapted over time to the climatic and soil conditions of this designation and that imprints the character to its wines; this variety represents more than 80% of the vineyards of the designation.

The Monastrell variety is a strain of Spanish origin, it is spread throughout the Mediterranean coast, being in Spain the third most planted variety.

It is a variety of great rusticity and high resistance to drought, it needs good sunshine. It has a medium-high sensitivity to mildew and oidium, it is very resistant to excoriosis, gray rot and moth, presenting high resistance to phylloxera.

Wines

The wines of the D.O. Jumilla present the differentiating characteristic with respect to others of being elaborated based on the Monastrell variety, which represents more than 80% of the cultivated surface and that with the modernization effort of producers and processors, have managed to gain the prestige and recognition of the Spanish and world wine world.

Land

The Jumilla designation of origin is located in the Southeast of Spain, it covers a wide region in the north of the region of Murcia and the southeastern part of the province of Albacete. It is a wild region, where the vineyards extend on a high plateau surrounded by mountains.

The soils of the designation are brown, brown-calcareous and calcareous, in general they have a great water capacity and medium permeability. This allows the vines to survive in prolonged drought conditions, taking good advantage of the available water. They are soils poor in organic matter, their structure does not allow the propagation of phylloxera, they are of high pH and low salinity and have a frank and sandy-loam texture that gives them good aeration. The vineyard is located on an altitude between 400 and 800 meters.

Climate

The character of Jumilla wines is determined by what is known as “terroir“. This is a magical combination of grape variety, soil composition, orientation and pruning of the vines, and climatology. This characteristic differentiates them from the products of other regions.

The climate of the region is continental influenced by the proximity of the Mediterranean to the east, and the plateau of La Mancha to the west. It is a sunny and arid climate, with about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, and little rain, about 300 liters per square meter per year. The regime of these rains is very irregular, sometimes torrential. The average annual temperature is 16º, with cold winters that reach sub-zero temperatures and hot summers where temperatures exceed 40º. The period of frosts usually takes place between the months of November and March.
