Monastrell is the grape with the largest number of cultivated hectares in our Protected Designation of Origin and therefore the most important and significant when making our wines. In addition to this variety, others such as Garnacha, Garnacha Tintorera, Cencibel, Airén, Pedro Ximénez, Macabeo, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet-Sauvignon are also grown in our area.
Monastrell results in balanced wines, well-rounded in the barrel, explosive on the nose; notes of black fruits and ripe fruit, cherry, strawberries and currants, with a strong intense purple red color with purple hues. On the palate they have structure and strength, with lively and persistent tannins.
The Monastrell vine is upright, with thick, short, sparsely branched shoots, its leaf has a pentagonal-shaped blade, with three marked lobes. Its bunches are small or medium and quite compact, with spherical and medium-sized berries, with a blue-black color, with a thick skin rich in anthocyanins; its pulp is fleshy and soft with little tannin content.
It is a very rustic variety and highly resistant to drought, it needs good sun exposure. It has a medium-high sensitivity to mildew and powdery mildew, it is very resistant to excoriosis, gray rot and moth, presenting high resistance to phylloxera.
The Monastrell variety is a vine of Spanish origin, it is spread throughout the Mediterranean coast, being in Spain the third most planted variety.
